How A 10 Year Old Convinced MEO To Create New Masks For Charity.

HOW A 10 YEAR OLD CONVINCED MEO TO CREATE NEW MASKS FOR CHARITY Lilah McDonald is unlike any 10 year old you have ever met. This pre-teen dreams of looking after the health of New Zealanders by reducing the use of plastic bottles and decreasing the consumption of sugary drinks. To achieve these dreams, Lilah is raising funds for her very first project under her social enterprise, Water Us Limited – building drinking fountains in Auckland’s parks and playgrounds. Born out of her own experience of seeing water fountains spread all across different European cities, Lilah came back home and questioned the lack of such fountains in Auckland and New Zealand. Upon research, she found out that only 5% of parks and 16% of playgrounds in Auckland have water fountains. This prevents children and adults from re-filling...

Now, as more countries provide vaccines to its citizens, questions are being raised whether we need to continue to follow pandemic precautions like face masks and social distancing, even after receiving the doses.  Health officials around the world recommend people continue to wear face masks, remain socially distant, wash their hands, and stay home when feeling sick – even after they have received the necessary numbers of COVID-19 vaccines.  This messaging might seem confusing - after all, isn’t the purpose of the vaccine to grant your immunity against the virus?    ARE YOU THE SPREADER? How to help someone with a disability wear a face mask

Since the start of the pandemic, several countries have made wearing a face mask mandatory. However, there is a lack of clarity around exemption of face mask usage for persons with disabilities. This not only leaves disabled people vulnerable to the virus, but also prevents their caregivers or loved ones from finding a viable solution to protect their needs. At the same time, wearing a face mask may present a challenge for some people with disabilities who are, for example, individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities, including autistic people, people who cannot independently put on or take off a mask, people with lung diseases or breathing difficulties, people who experience panic attacks while wearing masks, and people who are Deaf and hard of hearing. Before you contemplate, as a caregiver or loved one of someone with a...

There’s a huge debate happening right now on whether it should be mandatory for joggers to wear masks while running or exercising. As gyms slowly reopen, while the threat of the coronavirus continues to loom, it’s down to a personal choice whether you want to exercise in a mask. A study conducted by the University of Saskatchewan (USask) concluded that exercise performance and blood and muscle oxygen levels are not affected for healthy individuals wearing a face mask during strenuous workouts.  However, there are two camps to this conversation with some experts recommending home workouts and socially distanced runs instead of masking up during exercises. This is especially recommended for people who are new to exercising or for those who thought...

Last year, face masks were as elusive as the Facebook algorithm for most of the countries around the world. Now we have reached a stage where face masks automatically fall under our mental checklist of things to take with you when you step out for work or simply for a walk or in a public setting. It may be uncomfortable to wear at the start, but once you are used to it, you often forget that there’s something on your face and end up touching your face out of habit (raise your hands if you are one of those people!) In light of this, wearing a face mask can often be an added challenge for people who wear glasses or have a beard or just like to smile and acknowledge a passersby.  We’ve got some hacks to...
