Can face masks help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses?

Long before the world knew about Covid, masking was a common practice in many Asian countries. People in Japan started to wear masks when feeling sick as a courtesy to stop any sneezes from landing on other people. Motorcycle riders in the Philippines and India wear masks to deflect exhausts in heavy traffic. In Taiwan, masks are used during the cold winter months and as a barrier to airborne germs. The turning point to mask usage, however, was as a result of the deadly SARS outbreak in the early 2000s, post which face masks became a regular sight in Hong Kong, Japan, and other parts of Eastern Asia, and now due to Covid, the rest of the world. But, how exactly do masks prevent the spread of respiratory viruses? Results from more than 30 studies from around the world...

How to talk to someone who doesn’t wear a mask, can you change their mind?

Studies have found that wearing a mask is the single most effective public health measure at tackling Covid. In a first of its kind research conducted by public health experts from Australia, the UK and China, it was found that mask-wearing can significantly reduce the rate of Covid transmission. While vaccines are safe and effective and saving lives around the world, experts say most do not provide 100% protection. As countries battle to increase their vaccination rates, it is not yet known if jabs will prevent future transmission of emerging coronavirus variants.   However, now, a systematic review and meta-analysis of non-pharmaceutical interventions, found for the first time that mask wearing, social distancing and hand washing are all effective measures at curbing cases – with mask wearing being the most effective. All these health measures combined are stated to be...

Comment aborder l'appréhension lorsqu'il s'agit de porter un masque facial…

Around the world, the percentage of people wearing masks during the COVID-19 pandemic has varied enormously. They can easily be divided into three categories - the true maskers, those who believe and understand the purpose behind using a mask, the in-betweeners, who decide to wear a mask dependent on their situation and surroundings and the anti-maskers, who believe that wearing a mask infringes on their freedom, and do not like to be told what to do.  Face masks have been the ubiquitous symbol of a pandemic that has sickened millions of people and killed more than 4 million. In hospitals and other healthcare facilities, the use of medical-grade masks like the MEO Med face masks has cut down the transmission of...
