Since the start of the pandemic, several countries have made wearing a face mask mandatory. However, there is a lack of clarity around exemption of face mask usage for persons with disabilities. This not only leaves disabled people vulnerable to the virus, but also prevents their caregivers or loved ones from finding a viable solution to protect their needs. At the same time, wearing a face mask may present a challenge for some people with disabilities who are, for example, individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities, including autistic people, people who cannot independently put on or take off a mask, people with lung diseases or breathing difficulties, people who experience panic attacks while wearing masks, and people who are Deaf and hard of hearing. Ist es sicher, während des Trainings eine Gesichtsmaske zu tragen?

There’s a huge debate happening right now on whether it should be mandatory for joggers to wear masks while running or exercising. As gyms slowly reopen, while the threat of the coronavirus continues to loom, it’s down to a personal choice whether you want to exercise in a mask. Scientifically speaking, there is little to no risk while exercising with a mask for healthy individuals. A study conducted by the University of Saskatchewan (USask) concluded that exercise performance and blood and muscle oxygen levels are not affected for healthy individuals wearing a face mask during strenuous workouts.  However, there are two camps to this conversation with some experts recommending home workouts and socially distanced runs instead of masking up during exercises.
